The local authorities are seeking new residents by offering up to 15,000 euros to those who decide to settle there permanently. The incentive program
The Region of Sardinia has announced a generous package of incentives to attract new residents, in areas with a population under 3,000 people. According to the Daily Mail,, interested parties can receive up to 15,000 euros for the purchase or renovation of a home, up to 20,000 euros to start a small business, a monthly allowance of 600 euros for the first child and 400 euros for each subsequent one up to five years old. The program requires that new residents settle permanently and declare the house as their primary residence within 18 months.
Local authorities hope this will stimulate the local economy and breathe life into villages that are withering. The program is part of a strategy to revitalize parts of Italy affected by an aging population. According to figures cited by the newspaper Politico, Sardinia’s population has decreased from 1.64 million to 1.57 million over thirty years, with most residents concentrated around Cagliari and Sassari.
In small villages, such as Baradili with just 76 residents, the situation is even more difficult, as the last child was born ten years ago. The region and the municipalities are investing in infrastructure, opportunities for remote work, and support for small businesses, aiming to make Sardinia’s countryside attractive.
