One of the most enchanting medieval cities with a rich history, Toledo is one of the most captivating destinations in Spain. The «City of the Three Cultures», as it is called, harmoniously blends diverse elements, having long been a center of coexistence for Christians, Muslims, and Jews, creating an impressive mosaic of cultures and traditions.
From afar it looks like a postcard, built on the hill above the Tagus River. Toledo, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, is the capital of Castile-La Mancha, one of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain. It lies just 70 kilometers from Madrid and makes an ideal day trip. If you decide to stay more days, you will have plenty to see.

The city of Toledo is a true attraction in itself. In every narrow lane the medieval buildings make their presence felt. Different cultures blend harmoniously with one another and with the setting of the city, which feels as if it came out of a fairytale.
Toledo Cathedral (Catedral Primada de Toledo)
Toledos cathedral, La catedral de Santa María, is a masterpiece of architecture and one of the most impressive Gothic buildings in Spain, combining features of the Mudéjar style. The construction began in 1226 and the last additions were made in 1493. You will be impressed by the imposing tower and the stained glass windows, while you will also admire the work El Expolio by El Greco.
The Alcázar of Toledo (Alcázar de Toledo)
Atop the hill stands the Alcázar fortress. When you reach it you will enjoy panoramic views across the entire city. It houses the Spanish Army Museum, which hosts exhibitions on the military history of the country.
The Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca
A reminder of the religious coexistence that characterizes the city is the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca that is located in the Jewish Quarter and is the oldest in Europe. The Islamic influences in its architecture combine with Jewish elements and the white columns lend a sense of grandeur.
The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes
The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, built by the Catholic Monarchs, impresses with its Gothic architecture. Its inner garden stands out, as do the intricate reliefs on its walls.
The Santa Cruz Museum
At the Museo de Santa Cruz, the architecture and history of Toledo come together in one building. The striking 16th-century building next to the Alcázar de Toledo was once a hospital. Today, works related to the city are exhibited, and you will also see important paintings by El Greco there.
The El Greco Museum
The golden age for the city was the Renaissance, which was the spiritual and cultural center of Spain. El Greco (the Greek painter Doménikos Theotokópoulos) lived and created in Toledo, leaving a remarkable legacy. Many of his works are in museums and churches of the city, but to get a real taste of his work, you should visit the El Greco Museum.
It consists of two buildings, a 16th-century house, which has been recreated as the painters home, and a 20th-century building. There you will find some of his most important works, as well as those of other artists, while the furniture and ceramics of the era are not absent. Do not forget to step out into the wonderful blooming garden and sit down to rest.
What to do
Toledo is ideal for walking and exploration. Start from the bridge Alcántara Bridge with the wonderful view of the Tagus River. Pass through the walls from the Puerta de Bisagra and lose yourself in the cobbled lanes, discovering hidden squares and picturesque corners.
Walk in the Jewish Quarter, make your way to Plaza del Ayuntamiento, with the Town Hall of the city where you will also see the Puerta de los Leones, which gives access to the south side of the cathedral. Admire the lush Paseo del Tránsito park and sit next to the Santa Cruz Museum to enjoy the view from above. Nearby you will also find the escalators to go down or up to the hill if you do not want to walk. In the little shops you will find, apart from souvenirs you can buy the famous Damasquinado, the intricate jewelry of Toledo.
If you want to experience something unique, visit Toledo during the most important celebration, Corpus Christi. Its roots go back to the 15th century and it is one of the oldest celebrations of the place, with a movable date 60 days after Easter. The streets of the city are decorated and the official religious procession is accompanied by songs and is headed by the Archbishop of Toledo, the primate cardinal of Spain.
What to taste
The three cultural influences of Toledo are reflected in its culinary tradition. The sweet you will find in various versions is marzipan (Mazapan), made from almonds and sugar. Buy from the hidden Marzipan Conde or Obrador Santo Tome.
You will taste the traditional Manchego cheese at Restaurante El Peñón along with the meats and wine varieties of the region. Try the tapas, the small plates of Taberna Cuchara de Palo, as well as migas manchegas with fried bread, pork belly and chorizo sausage.
How to get there
You will reach Toledo quickly from Madrid by train. It is the fastest option, as the journey lasts about 30 minutes. From the station of Toledo, you will walk 10 minutes to the Alcántara Bridge and the old town.
