Colorful Curaçao, the tiny island of 155,000 inhabitants located in the southern Caribbean, is a destination that blends diverse cultural influences, impressive beaches, rich history, and intriguing gastronomy. It is an island country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and consists of the eponymous island of Curaçao (area 444 sq. km.) and the uninhabited islet (area 1.7 sq. km.) Klein Curaçao (Little Curaçao).
This little island, which is hard to spot on the map, just made history by qualifying for the World Cup in 2026. Curaçao is, in fact, the smallest country to have participated in the sporting event so far. But what can you see and do if you travel all the way there?
Stroll through Willemstad
The Willemstad (Willemstad), the capital of Curaçao and former capital of the Netherlands Antilles until their dissolution in October 2010, is home to many of the country’s attractions. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city has the allure of a bygone era, with strikingly colorful buildings that blend Dutch design with Caribbean architecture. Among the city’s top sights are the famous Queen Emma Bridge, one of the few permanent floating bridges in the world, and the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in America.
Discover Afro-Creole culture
If you want to get to know the country’s Afro-Creole culture better, Kas di Pali Maishi is a must-visit. This small kunkuku (plantation) house is a museum that will immerse you in the daily life of rural Creole communities. Beyond the guided tour, in the specially designed workshop you can experience local traditions hands-on and bake the local bread pan será, make coconut oil, and aloe vera creams.
The island’s beaches and underwater riches
Curaçao truly offers many options for dips and relaxation in crystalline waters, with about 35 different beaches for every taste. The island’s beaches differ from most in the Caribbean as they stand out for their shape, as well as for the limestone rocks that surround them. On many of the beaches you can enjoy a unique snorkeling experience as well as diving. Beneath the surface you’ll encounter everything from colorful coral reefs and impressive shipwrecks to underwater caves.
The authentic Curaçao liqueur
A trip to Curaçao isn’t complete without tasting the country’s namesake, colorful drink, Blue Curacao. You’ll find it in virtually every bar on the island, but it’s worth learning more about it through a tour of Landhuis Cholobo. This renowned 19th-century country estate houses the Curaçao Liqueur Distillery. There you will learn everything about both the liqueur and the island, taste it, and enjoy a hands-on experience in the specially designed cocktail workshop.
Experience an ATV adventure
If you want to explore a more rural side of Curaçao and get your adrenaline pumping, take an ATV tour. On this exciting ride of a few hours you’ll get to know the whole island, soaking up some of its most scenic views and beautiful beaches, especially on its western side. Essentially, it’s an adventurous guided tour where you’ll sip coconut water from a fresh coconut, discover some of the island’s most popular beaches, such as the top snorkeling spot Grote Knip, Playa Grandi. There you’ll have the chance to dive alongside sea turtles and visit the flamingo sanctuary.
