South Aegean: A culinary journey through the Cyclades and the Dodecanese

From Paros to Rhodes and from Nisyros to Naxos, food lovers have countless choices on the islands of the South Aegean.

Over 30 million visitors have the chance to savor the local cuisine during their visit to Greece. The range of gastronomic experiences in the South Aegean, which includes the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, is as thrilling as its islands. Unique products cultivated in the islands’ rich soil and seafood from the crystal-clear Aegean waters come together in imaginative traditional dishes that make the South Aegean a treasure of Greece’s culinary heritage.

The gastronomic influences on local recipes

From the Cyclades and Kea in the west to the Dodecanese and Kastellorizo in the east, the imprint of the cultures that passed through the region over the centuries is evident. The presence of Venetians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Arabs is reflected in many island recipes. Alongside the Greek tradition, these influences shaped the local cuisine, with locals devising ways to turn the land’s ingredients into delicious specialties.

Today, many of these classic dishes continue to be served in tavernas, meze restaurants and ouzeri, while at the same time the region’s chefs add their own contemporary and creative touches to traditional flavors. They draw inspiration from traditional dishes or create recipes from scratch, yet retain the essential elements and ingredients that make them stand out.

After all, for Greeks, food is not simply a means of survival, but a pleasure. Food is a celebration that gathers friends and family at the table and is an integral part of Greek culture, a fact that is evident in the South Aegean.

Gastronomy and tourism in the South Aegean

The Regional Governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Hatzimarkos, notes that the successful showcasing of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese as tourist destinations is widely known: «What may be less obvious is that the region’s gastronomic offerings are a key factor in this success», he says. The work of those who produce local products, together with the chefs and restaurants on the islands, has significantly influenced the course of tourism in the region, Mr. Hatzimarkos states.

«Food and the experiences related to the destination are a very powerful means that create lifelong memories. They spark the desire to return, to explore and to share these experiences with others», he notes.

The South Aegean was named the European Region of Gastronomy in 2019, in recognition of its efforts to support local culinary heritage and to showcase the archipelago as an attractive gastronomic destination. To achieve this distinction the region worked to increase the number of certified local products, to create local products from homegrown ingredients that travelers can try, and to enable young chefs to become global ambassadors of local gastronomy. Talented young chefs have won numerous awards for traditional dishes in competitions such as the European Young Chef.

Additionally, restaurants in the region take center stage at the annual Greek Cuisine Awards. A cornerstone of the region’s efforts is the Aegean Cuisine, a quality-assurance and networking program that embraces producers and restaurants.

Cyclades: Islands full of flavor

Looking at the sun-drenched sandy beaches and the barren, rocky landscapes of the Cyclades, one might think these islands do not produce local goods. Yet the Cyclades abound in agricultural produce and exceptional raw ingredients. Each island has its own microclimate, which has played a defining role in the evolution of traditional local dishes. This very geological harshness, a result of volcanic activity and scant rainfall, blesses the soil with minerals that lend unparalleled flavor to the products.

Dodecanese: A multicultural blend

With imposing mountains, fertile hills and sheer cliffs in shades of terracotta and ochre, the landscapes of the Dodecanese reflect the vibrancy of their people. Here, the farm-to-table philosophy is second nature. Many restaurant owners tend their own gardens, while others have fishing boats and bring in the catch of the day, essentially letting nature and the season determine the day’s menu.

How to experience gastronomy on the islands of the South Aegean

Food lovers can taste the South Aegean’s delights in many ways. On whichever island you find yourself, choose to buy fresh vegetables from the farmers’ markets, try joining gastronomic tours, as well as olive oil and wine tastings. If you love the sea, you can go fishing with local fishermen and cook the catch of the day.

One of the best ways to fully experience the local gastronomic culture is to combine your trip with one of the festivals held on the islands. Communities gather to celebrate the harvest of specific products, seasonal fish or a traditional drink, and visitors are always welcome at the festivities.

Wherever your journey leads you in the South Aegean, dare to explore the region’s great variety of gastronomic offerings. Ask questions, seek out traditional products and dishes, and encourage the chefs who experiment with innovative takes on classic flavors. Supporting the area’s small producers, fishermen and artisans is vital for the long-term preservation of the South Aegean’s unique culinary heritage. After all, the beaches, sunsets and mountains have already drawn millions of visitors from every corner of the planet. However, gastronomy is one of the many reasons that will keep them coming back again and again.
